Domain Name Registration is not Ownership
Note that you do not own the domain name outright.
You have merely paid to have it registered to you for a set period of time. This is the way that all domain name registrations work.
The minimum period of time is usually one year, although some domain endings may be longer. For example .co.uk domain extensions have a minimum of two years registration period.
You can usually transfer domain names you have registered to a new registrar in future if you wish.
